Physical Education
Overview of Department
At Rye College, we recognise the importance of a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires students to succeed both in sport and other physically demanding activities. Through providing opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, and to compete in sport and activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect, we seek to do just that.
Curriculum Statement: Values and Aims
Our curriculum provides coverage of a wide range of sports, from hockey and football to badminton, Athletics and Tennis. By so doing, we aim to meet in full the national curriculum for physical education, ensuring that all our students:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
Our spiral curriculum means topics will be repeated each year, but with deepening levels of difficulty / increasing complexity in lessons and reinforcing previous learning. Topics will be adapted appropriately depending on misconceptions and general ability (Hands, Head and Heart), with an emphasis on healthy and active lifestyles.
Key Stage 3 PE at Rye College
Throughout Key Stage 3, our students will understand and apply the matters, skills and processes relevant to each specialist sport. This will enable them to build on and embed the physical development and skills learned previously, and to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques.
They should also understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work, as well as developing the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life with a detailed understanding of the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Students are be taught to:
- Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games
- Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports
- Perform dances using advanced dance techniques within a range of dance styles and forms
- Take part activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
- Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
