Careers Programme
Our aims
Our aim is to provide students at Rye College with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue, and succeed in their education post-16, including employment and higher education. In doing so, students will receive impartial information, advice and guidance related to examinations, choices, courses, routes through education, the labour market and the world of work. Our students will gain the relevant employability skills to enable them to succeed in their chosen route after leaving Rye College.
Careers Programme Overview
The entitlement framework provides the opportunities for students to access a range of careers activities with clear progression through key stages. Activities should engage and interest students to properly prepare them for life and work in the 21st century. Statutory guidance focuses on the Government careers strategy which explains the need for a clear and progressive careers programme that is accessible for ALL students and includes impartial careers guidance from Year 8 onwards.
The Careers Programme at Rye College is very much like a journey to further and higher education and employment. As students’ progress through the years, they focus on several distinct aspects related to careers:
- Identifying personal skills and qualities
- Setting targets and developing aspirations
- Developing employability skills linked to our Rye College Values, particularly the 'Be Employable' strand
- Understanding different jobs/employment sectors, LMI and stereotypes in careers
- Bespoke advice and guidance
- Planning for the future
- Applying to college
- Financial Education
The careers programme is delivered through our Life Education Curriculum, although is covered across the whole curriculum. Every subject will focus on careers at various stages in the school year, either through the topics delivered, or through whole school careers initiatives such as careers week. Impartial advice and guidance is provided through Thrive Careers.
The programme provides a wide variety of activities that are focused on providing high quality information and career guidance. This will allow the students to make the best possible decisions for their future career paths. These activities include bespoke sessions with external partners, organisations, and employers to offer careers insights and information on specific jobs, opportunities, and pathways.

Monitoring, Review and Evaluation
The careers programme is monitored regularly by the Careers Lead, Mrs Starkey. Activities may be added to the programme to introduce new initiatives and events that may become available through the East Sussex Careers Hub and other organisations.
The programme is reviewed on a yearly basis through consultation with Curriculum Leaders, SLT and external providers. The programme is amended in line with new legislation, the latest advice from the Careers and Enterprise Company and curriculum changes. The needs of the students and the current educational climate are always considered.
The programme is evaluated through consultation with our Student Leadership Team, student voice activities, parental and staff surveys. The careers lead completes an evaluation 3 times a year using the Compass evaluation tool introduced by the Careers and Enterprise Company . This evaluates the extent to which the Gatsby Benchmarks are met. The Investors in Careers Award process enables a robust evaluation every 3 years.
